Book: Cuyahoga Valley Picture History

The Cuyahoga Valley is nestled between Akron and Cleveland. After 1795, settlers from New England arrived in the wilderness and carved out farmsteads in the land they called the Connecticut Western Reserve. In 1827, the Ohio & Erie Canal opened through the valley linking this wilderness to outside markets. Villages sprung up along the canal and industries such as boat building, milling, quarrying, and brickmaking appeared. In 1880, the Valley Railway began operation through the valley introducing visitors from Akron and Cleveland to recreational opportunities. Each valley community developed much like one another, each benefiting from the river, canal, and railroad. However, each has a different story to tell, shaped by the people who once resided here. Their stories layer one upon another and reveal the unique history of the valley.

Book: Akron-Canton Football Heritage

Football in the Akron-Canton area can be traced back to the 1890s with Buchtel College and John W. Heisman. In the early 1900s, multiple professional teams sprouted throughout the eastern Ohio region. Major powerhouses included the Canton Bulldogs, Akron Indians, and Massillon Pros. In 1920, the Akron Pros became the first modern-day national champions of organized football. With the formation of the American Professional Football Association and the National Football League, many players and coaches with ties to the Akron-Canton region have become synonymous with football excellence. Today football in this area continues to play an integral part of life from the high school level to the college ranks to all types of professional football. Akron-Canton Football Heritage traces the rich and storied history of football in the region as well as the contribution of local players, coaches, and teams through pictures obtained from multiple collections.

Book: Akron-Canton Baseball Heritage

Baseball has a strong presence in the Akron-Canton area dating back to its formative years in the late 1880s with such teams as the Akron Acorns (1887), the Akron Akrons (1890), and the Canton Nadjys (1889). In the 1920s, manufacturing companies such as Goodyear and Firestone fielded baseball teams that battled for local bragging rights and opportunities for players to make the big leagues. Along with these industrial leagues, professional baseball found its way to the Akron-Canton area with minor-league teams including the Akron Yankees (1935–1941), the Canton-Akron Indians (1989–1996), and the Akron Aeros (1997–). In addition to teams affiliated with major-league ball clubs, this area gave birth to independent teams such as the Canton Crocodiles (1997–2001), the Canton Coyotes (2002), and others. Besides professional baseball gracing local fields, nearby universities have storied baseball programs of their own. These schools have turned out such major-league greats as Eugene Michael, Thurman Munson, and 1980 Cy Young winner Steve Stone. Akron-Canton Baseball Heritage offers a unique look into the history of baseball in the region with historic and present-day photographs.

Book: Akron Churches Early Architecture

The history of Akron begins with the building of the great Ohio and Erie Canal. The financial incentives offered to workers building the canal brought men from all over to build the great “ditch,” and as they and their families settled in Akron, they also began to build magnificent churches and cathedrals that became the heart of their communities. With roots stretching back to the early 1800s, many of the churches that stand today are more than a century old and in many instances are the second or third church to be built by their congregations. Each successive church more grand than the last, these edifices were literally built with the pennies, nickels, and dimes of their members, who built structures that reflected the prevailing architectural styles of the day. Many of the churches have been lost to time, but many of these architectural treasures remain and continue to stand as testament to the overwhelming desire of the faithful to build churches that reflect the glory of God.

Author Bio: Kally Mavromatis is an Akron-area freelance writer and reporter, writing for area newspapers and covering events for an international wire service. She also has served as board member and newsletter editor for a local historic and architectural preservation group.
